I love this. I love that it's done in traditional media- I admit to being clueless as to how you accomplished the lettering and the UFP logo- masking? I don't know as much about painting techniques as I should. I also love that instead of depicting Data in full Sherlock regalia, the only incongruous accoutrement is his pipe. I don't remember much about the episode in which he was first introduced to Conan Doyle's detective; I just remember the scenes where he's smoking the pipe. Oh, and I love the wisps of smoke.
Hi Rocketdave! Thanks for your comment, in fact I did this illustration in a mixed media. I explain the reason in my blog, but my english sucks so I decided to do not write it in here. It's all about Data's double nature, human (he tries it so hard) and machine. (human=traditional, machine=digital). So I made a digital work on the lettering, logo and Data's skin mixed with the traditional media. But it could be done with traditional techniques too by using liquid masking film if you want! It's complicated, but it's possible.
Ah. Thanks for the explanation. I thought it possible that portions were done digitally, but I wasn't positive Unfortunately, deviantART doesn't really have a category for art that's part digital and part traditional; I've frequently been confused as to how I should categorize my art because of that. I'm sure that doing the lettering on the computer is way easier than trying to do it all by hand, so don't blame you for doing things the way you did. However it was accomplished, it's a cool piece.
